Ashley is currently a Ph.D. student in the Northwestern Department of African American Studies. Her research is focused on black women educators in Northern cities during the mid-twentieth century.

The advice she would have given herself before graduating is, “Don’t worry if things do not go according to plan; work hard, have faith and everything will be fine."

JFEW Alumna Gabrielle gives inspiring advice

Posted By Jamie Spence, Wednesday, March 29, 2017
Updated: Monday, December 18, 2017

Meet JFEW alumna, Gabrielle, graduate of Hunter College! Since graduation, Gabrielle has been working at Cion Investment Management as an associate in their compliance department. Now she is transitioning back into public policy and is searching for the perfect opportunity. In her spare time, Gabrielle has maintained her French language skills by taking classes at the French Institute Alliance Française, and she is passionate about traveling as much as possible with her husband and their two dogs!

When asked for the advice she would have given herself before graduating Gabrielle stated, "I would tell myself to never lose the creativity and ideas gained as an undergraduate. Sitting at a desk all day often makes it hard to see beyond filing papers and crafting excel spreadsheets. It's difficult to remember that before we entered the work force we had innovative ideas and a passion to fuel change. I urge you to never forget those nuggets of inspiration. Continue to seek out the things that motivates you most, and which makes you feel whole. Volunteer, take a class and reach out to an old professor. All of these things will help rekindle the agent of change within us.”

She will be interning this summer at The United States Department of Justice in the Criminal Division - Office of Policy and Legislation. After she graduates, she is hoping to do policy and advocacy work in order to reform our criminal justice and prison system.

When asked the advice she would have given herself before graduating she stated, "It would have been to cultivate friendships that will leave you inspired and yearning for more. If you surround yourself with good people then you will always be happy and trying to change the world for the better.”

Pauline, you are an inspiration and you give wonderful advice!

"JFEW was one of the most rewarding experiences. It made my undergrad career fulfilling, and I would do it all over again if I could. I highly recommend this scholarship to students who are passionate about pursuing public service!"

Our JFEW Scholar Peace Titilawo recently graduated from Hunter College, and she was recognized at her ceremony by Hunter College president, Jennifer Raab for her many undergraduate accomplishments!

Peace's plans after graduation are to work full-time and eventually return to school for an MBA or MPA. We can't wait to see what the future has in store for her!
